Chapter Fourteen

“The coyotes almost attacked you?” Beth asked as they jogged along the shaded, tree-lined path. Forest Park had the most beautiful running trails in all of Portland, and it was a near simulation of the conditions they would be running in on the weekend—minus all the changes in elevation.

“They were thinking about it,” Kerrigan said, glad to be outside and running again after spending the past few days holed up at her parents’ place so she wouldn’t be alone, making calls to former employees and looking into the IT manager at work to see if there was anything shady about him. But she was keeping an eye out for coyotes here too.

Most of the female former employees had bad things to say about Carl, but Kerrigan hadn’t found anything bad about the IT manager. As far as she could tell, he’d had no good reason to aid in setting Beth up aside from their personality conflict.

“Didn’t have to use the bear banger,” she continued, “but let’s just say I’m glad I was with Travis when it happened.” It had been three days since that kiss, and she couldn’t stop thinking about it. Or him.

“Huh. More excitement to look forward to on the race, I guess. At the start there’ll be enough of us bunched together that no coyotes in their right mind would think about bothering us. But once we start to spread out more, we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled.”

“I’m gonna have my fill of excitement just trying to finish it.”

“It’s all about mental toughness,” Beth said in her practical, no-nonsense way.

Beth had mental toughness and then some. Kerrigan was sort of in awe of her. She’d been so anxious about meeting up today, dreading the level of awkwardness she had expected when the moment came. To her surprise and relief, Beth had acted like nothing had happened, and they had hit the trails.

A few miles later, sufficiently warmed up, they paused at a fork in the trail to stretch out their legs. “How are your feet so far with all the training?” Beth asked. She winced a little, pulled the strap of her sports bra aside and Kerrigan saw the bruising there.

“Okay. Few blisters and hot spots, but nothing too bad.” She was expecting a whole lot worse on the weekend, and would carry the supplies to deal with it as best she could. Maybe Travis would give her another foot rub if they met up in Portland on Sunday night as he left base. That would almost make it worth the pain. “What happened to you?”

Beth glanced down at herself. “Oh. Just some chafing from a long run I did. It’s fine.” She tugged the collar of her fleece jacket closed and did the zipper all the way up. “Make sure you keep on top of all that. If your feet get too bad, you won’t be able to finish the race.”

Kerrigan nodded and set the back of her heel onto the wooden bench to ease the stiffness out of her hamstrings.
